Vans Skate Era is back, meeting its next evolution in the all-new Skate Era WaffleCup™.

50 years of an icon: The 1976 legend returns alongside its most high-tech evolution yet.

We’re stoked to help Vans celebrate a massive milestone, 50 years of skateboarding in 2026. To mark the occasion, the brand is bringing back the shoe that started it all: the original 1976 Skate Era. Having the legend Tony Alva back in the mix to reintroduce his co-creation really brings the whole story full circle for us.

The History of the Vans Era

The Vans Era, originally known as Style #95, holds a legendary place in sneaker history as the world's first shoe designed by skateboarders, for skateboarding.

1. The Collaboration (1976)

While Vans had been around since 1966 with the "Authentic" (Style #44), it was a deck shoe not specifically meant for skating. In 1976, Vans teamed up with legendary Z-Boys Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta. They took the basic design of the Authentic and added specific features that skaters desperately needed:

  • Padded Collar: A cushioned rim around the ankle to provide protection and comfort during high-impact tricks.

  • Multi-Panel Construction: This allowed for different color combinations, leading to the iconic "Two-Tone" look (initially released in red and blue).

2. "Off The Wall" Origins

The release of the Era coincided with the birth of the famous "Off The Wall" logo. The phrase itself came from the Dogtown skaters literally skating "off the wall" in empty swimming pools. The Era was the first shoe to feature the "Off The Wall" heel tab, which remains a brand staple today.

3. The "Sticky" Secret

Skaters in the '70s gravitated toward the Era because of its Waffle Sole. Made from a unique rubber compound, the sole was twice as thick as competitors' and provided a "sticky" grip on the board that was revolutionary at the time.

4. Innovation through Necessity

In the early days, Vans had a quirky policy that was perfect for skaters: you could buy a single shoe. Because skaters often wore out their "leading" foot much faster than the other, they could walk into a Vans shop and replace just one shoe for a fraction of the price.

5. Evolution to the "Skate Era"

The new Vans Skate Era evolves the original Style #95 with modern durability and performance. This reengineered classic blends a timeless canvas and suede upper with DuraCap™ reinforcement and SickStick™ rubber for maximum grip. Featuring PopCush™ footbeds for impact protection and internal tongue straps for a locked-in fit, it delivers the ultimate balance of heritage style and professional-grade skate tech.

The Spring campaign is all about that "past meets future" energy, featuring a heavy crew ranging from icons like Geoff Rowley to the new generation like Shiloh Catori and Diego Todd. Keep an eye out for the symbolic "torch passing" film dropping later in March.
